Report from Moss and Day #6

Bild
So, MtgForLife . Quite a few cool things the last days! A big one is from the Legacy nationals in Sweden taking place October 30th. The organizers contacted me the other day and told me they wanted to support the campaign and decided to donate all the entry fees from the tournament to #MtgForLife. That is awesome. I guess it's time to build a Legacy deck again. Is Monoblack Necrotic Ooze a deck? We also have a few new backers from outside Scandinavia, which is great. The campaign has mostly been backed by players from Northen Europe yet, but it looks like its starting to spread. But now, lets give the word to Lars Harald "Verzutiko" Nordli, head honcho and admin for NorskeMagic.com, who organized last weekend's old school tournament in Moss, Norway. This is his story (with some pictures added by me). Enjoy! /Mg out .... When I was about to organize Moss’ first convention, I knew that I wanted to have the 93/94-format on the program. Mostly of my own in...

Hoarding in Oslo

Bild
So, I think I've got an idea. It has been occupying my mind for the last week. It might fail spectacularly, but it might actually work. I need a few more days to work out the last few kinks, but I aim to post it here by the weekend. It is not by any means anything political, but it might be a way for the mtgunderground to make an impact. But that's a few days from now. Anyway, last Friday Hardy and I got banished from the Joy Pad to skulk the streets of Oslo. Our apartment was gleefully squatted by a ragtag team of women soccer players, and our welcome could quickly get overstayed. So we packed our bags with the beer we could carry, a bottle of gin for good measure, and threw a pile of 93/94 decks on top. Some light skulking later we arrived at the home of Jørgen, a local Eternal Viking with a collection to put the average GP to shame. We're talking full Alpha P9 and more black-bordered Volcanic Islands than Hawaii after a BP oil spill. I never met him bef...

Pimpvitational and Norwegian tech

Bild
Good things come to those who act. The date and format for Pimpvitational 14/15 are finally set, and in a few weeks I'll be battling with the finest of the foulest. Characters like n00bcon 6 winner Stalin, BSK winner Hagelpump, Elof, FreeSpace and Sehl will gather in Gothenburg to drink beer and fight for the Pimpwalker Champion title.  Probably also a Time Walk playmat and a trophy up for grabs. The format of this year's tournament is 93/94 Highlander (i.e. all cards except basic lands are restricted), with a small twist. A deck cannot contain more than nine cards from the ordinary restricted list, and additionally Library of Alexandria is banned. This means that you could play all the power cards if you want, but then you can't use Demonic Tutor, Balance, Sol Ring, Braingeyser, or any of the other restricted staples. I think that Sol Ring is the clear autoinclude in pretty much all decks, and that Ancestral is an obvious inclusion in any deck playing blu...

Joypad Open: A study in soot

Bild
The phone wakes me up. I stumble to answer it, barley supporting my movements on my newly sprained ankle. A scent of decadence in the room. The physical pain in my foot is second to the psychological embarrassment. Maybe I'm not 20 anymore. Maybe I should not spend 14 hours drinking and dancing in the streets. Maybe two or three punk bands are enough for one evening, and maybe I shouldn't be drinking Jack from the bottle. After I trip down a stair and clearly sprain my foot, maybe I should listen to my girlfriend when she suggests taking a cab home rather than continue running down the streets of Oslo. Sometimes, I'm not a very bright man. It's Kungmarkus on the phone. He's been travelling from Arvika with JohanGuld and Artelas, and he asks where he can park his car.   13:40. Yeah, it's 13:40. The tournament is scheduled to start in twenty minutes, and I'm a Scathe Zombie away from home. I'm at Øyann's place. She left a few hours ear...

Joy Pad Open, blags, and California tech

Bild
Just a quick heads up. This Sunday my roommate Hardy and I will host the first non-proxy 93/94 tournament in Oslo. It will take place in our apartment, aka the Joy Pad. We decided on the time last Sunday, and are hoping for around 6-8 competitors, given our meticulous planning and early heads up. The tournament starts at 14:00, Sunday the 7th. There is no tournament fee, but betting is encouraged and there will be some kind of price for winning. Bring beer. So what beer you ask? Personally I recommend to match the beer with the deck. You e.g. don't want to be binging Red Stripe playing Stasis, as it would cause problems with bathroom breaks and rounds going to time. MonoGreen. Works great with American Pale Ales Creatureless TaxEdge. Something spontaneous fermented and sour, in particular if you don't run Land's Edge and have Feldon's Cane as the sole wincon. Alternatively some kind of hipster beer geek stuff like 2nd edition Red Horizon. Distress....
