Old School Mtg

I moved to Munich two weeks ago on an assignment at Wirecard, and haven't been able to update anything here because of that (and a conference in Dubai last weekend). Hopefully I'll get a solid internet access outside of work soon and I'll post something new.

The dust has settled after a great weekend in Borås, with the company of good friends, good beer, and lots of great magic. In the tournament, I lost my first round aginst an even more aggressive red-white deck, but followed that up by a a win against UBG Goodstuff, another win against something I really can't remember (I know my Cities in Bottles were good, and he had mind twist, so Deckish maybe?), and a third win against Rickard Samuelssons newest creation (power and erhnam). I was 3-1 going into the last round, but it's cheap to draw into t8, so I played, lost, and got 9th. This friday marks the third annual tournament at BSK. There's lots of tech floating around in my local discussion group, metagame breakdowns and ideas. It's clearly not easy to build the correct deck even if you figure out how to break the metagame, since most players doesn't have access to the entire card pool. If you realize you want to play 4 Nether Void, or a set of Forcefield, you'll have a hard time requiring those cards anyway. At Warcon, we saw an aggressive version of the Deck emerge. At n00bcon, the world championship, the Parfait deck showed off as a potentially stronger control deck than even the Deck. Relic Barrier could be a top tier this tournament as well, either as a part of a prison deck or as a way to counter it. The only cards played by all decks in the t8 last n00bcon was Sol Ring and Strip Mine, but we saw a whopping 28/32 Disenchants as well. It'll be great to see everybody again! The second biggest tournament of the year is coming up in little over a week, and I really look forward to see old and new faces. Viktor has booked two luxury suites at Hotel Scandic Plaza in Borås for the weekend, and as usual the main tournament will be held the friday before Halloween, adjacent to the BSK convention. As customary for national tournaments, the price is a Giant Shark from the Dark:   We are currently about 20 people signed up for the tournament, which means it's already the second largest in the history of the format so far (second to this years World Championship with 34 players), and it's already larger than last years BSK tournament with 18 players. All the previous shark winners have signed up, including forces like last years winner Robert Schram and the two-time n00bcon winner and current World Champion Rickard Samuelson. They played a small vintage tournament in Arvika 11 days ago, and sent me their standing, and since non-proxy vintage are part of the pimpwalker system I have now updated their pimpwalker standings. 8 people showed up and here's the results. Racetraitor won the tournament and for this was awarded 2 points Magnus76 came in second and got 2 point for this Jockemon placed third and earned 1 points for this. (Racetraitor and Mangus76 earned the same amount of points since we always round up).

Last weekend I attended a tournament at Wizard Games, a local game store in Gothenburg. Due to some unfortunate scheduling, the other big store in gothenburg had a Legacy-tournament the same day, and it might have resulted in fewer players in either tournament. Anyways, three fourths of a doozen old school gamers gathered to win glory and a crudly signed Moss Monster. First pick Moss Monster. Almost strictly better than Ironroot Treefolk. The winning deck, played by Kalle Nord. Chip Hogan/Weismann/Rick Lay-pile. Warmup between white weenie and Skull of Orm controll. The Skull of Orm deck unfortunatly lacked 6 basic swamps, and clearly had some mana problems. Black Mirror. Honka (on the left) overslept somewhere in a strange side of town and didn't make it to the first round. 700 SEK cab fare later he was at the site, and promptly won all his other duels to end up at second place after the undefeated Kalle. Turn one Juzam goes to town. Control Magic is awesome. ...
